David Albury

Co-Chair, The Innovation United Limited

David Albury is an independent organisational and policy consultant, specialising in the development and implementation of strategies to address complex issues in public services. From 2002 to 2005 he was Principal Adviser in the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit. His current work focuses on transformation and innovation in public services. David has advised local, national and international organisations across the full range of public services and has coached teams of and individual top managers and professionals. Before becoming a consultant, after a decade as an academic researching, writing and teaching about technological innovation, organisational development and cultural change, David held a number of senior management posts in higher education with responsibilities for corporate strategy, regional partnerships, educational development, information systems and engagement in urban regeneration. David works extensively with top managers, leading professionals, senior civil servants and Ministers in Departments, agencies and organisations across the public sector. He has helped turn round failing and under-performing organisations in health, education and local government and assisted high performing organisations to break new ground and push the leading edge. In 2008 he advised Lord Darzi and the Department of Health on futures, innovation and leadership aspects of the Next Stage Review of the NHS. He is Co-Chair of the Innovation Unit; a NESTA Public Service Innovation Lab Associate; Visiting Professor in Innovation Studies at King’s College London; a member of DIUS’ Public Sector Steering Group; an Expert Adviser to Capgemini; and an Associate of Demos.


Andrea Baranes

Banca Etica, Popular Banking

Andrea Baranes works for CRBM private financial institution campaigns. Mr. Baranes collaborates with the Fondazione Culturale Responsabilità Etica, the Ethical Bank Group and on research and studies on issues related to finance and economics. Mr. Baranes was secretary of the Italian WTO campaign “This World is not for Sale” up to the 2003 Ministerial Conference in Cancun. Mr. Baranes is the author of various publications on international finance and trade, including “Responsabilità e Finanza – guida alle iniziative in campo socio-ambientale per gli istituti di credito e le imprese finanziarie”, “Perchè il mondo ha bisogno di tasse globali” and “Il mondo è di tutti – I Beni Pubblici Globali e il loro finanziamento”. Mr. Baranes also collaborates with several specialist magazines addressing the economy and sustainability including “Valori” and “Altraeconomia”. He is the Director of the “Osservatorio Finanza” website. Mr. Baranes is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the BankTrack international network, the Attac Association in Italy and a member of the Ethic Committee of Etica Sgr, a savings company for the Ethic Bank Group.


Johnstone Baguma


Mr. Baguma studied Computer Science & Information Technology at Makerere University Kampala. He is the founder & Executive Director, Toro Development Network (ToroDev) since June 2006. ToroDev is a community based NGO that promotes the access and strategic use of ICT for Development (ICT4D) tools through Entrepreneurship & Innovation in the Rwenzori Region of Western Uganda. ToroDev’s main strategic themes include; ICT Policy Research & Advocacy, ICTEnabled Business Incubation Initiative and Integrated Software Systems Consultancy Services. He also serves as the Project Leader, GenARDIS III “ Increasing Small‐Scale Women Farmers Revenues through ICT4D‐Enabled Production and Marketing Tools in Kabarole and Kyenjojo Districts of Western Uganda” that is funded by CTA, HIVOS, IDRC and APC under the Women’s Network. Mr. Baguma is a co‐founder & Chairman, Kabarole Information Centre (KIC) an ICT4D Research, Training & Resource Centre located in Fort Portal Municipality, Western Uganda. It was launched by the Minister of ICT, Republic of Uganda, in November 2008 as a growing Training & Research Think Tank for sustainable socio‐economic development of Social Entrepreneurs in the Rwenzori Region of Western Uganda. The key beneficiaries of the centre that ToroDev focuses on are the young people, especially fresh graduates from all Ugandan Universities, tertiary institutions of learning, vocational and high school leavers, empower them to transform the theoretical knowledge they possess and employ themselves in the private sector that accounts for 75% of Uganda’s National GDP. Since May 2009, Mr. Baguma has been serving as Chairman, Multi‐Stakeholders’ Committee for the establishment of the “Agricultural Production & Market Information Sharing System” an e‐Project that is being developed in partnership with SNV‐The Netherlands Development Organization, Rwenzori Portfolio, InfoTrade (FIT) Uganda, Google SMS and MTN‐Uganda. He’s been also a member of Itrainers, an Anglophone group of ICT for Development Practioners involved in promoting training and institutional capacity building to use Web 2.0 Tools in East and Southern Africa since December 2007. In partnership with the International Institute for Communication Development (IICD), Association for Progressive Communication (APC) and the East Africa Centre for Open Source Software (EACOSS). Mr. Baguma is also a partner with the African Virtual Open Source Initiative & Resources (AVOIR), at the Faculty of Computing & Information Technology, Makerere University Kampala, Uganda National Coordinating Centre January 2008.


Paolo Boccardelli

Associate Professor of Economics and Enterprise Strategy and Management, Faculty of Economics, LUISS University of Rome

Paolo Boccardelli is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Economics Department of the Luiss “Guido Carli” University. Prof. Boccardelli coordinates the Management Area of the Luiss Management Division, is responsible for the “Measurement Framework” and serves as Project Manager for the Luiss Management “Economics of eGovernment” study developed for the European Union DG Information Society. Moreover, he is the Media Coordinator and a member of the work group for the POLIDEMACO Project (Development and Application of a Simulation Model for Strategic Energy Decisions). Prof. Boccardelli teaches Organisation Theory (Project Management Module) for the military Inter-forces Advanced Staff Course and the Master in International Strategic Studies. From 2003, Prof. Boccadelli is an international export with the Australian Research Council in Sydney. From 2001, Prof. Boccardelli has coordinated research activities and headed the development project of the Mobile Internet Observatory promoted by the Luiss School of Management, Ansa, Autodesk, Ericsson Telecommunications, Eurisko, TIM, Tin and Wind Telecommunications.


Carlo Borgomeo

Head of Economics department Confcooperative

Carlo Borgomeo, an expert on SME development and labour policy, has a vast experience in the management of companies and complex organisations and institutional relations with public administrations. Mr. Borgomeo is also an expert on local development and policy for the Mezzogiorno and has successfully designed and managed various initiatives addressing youth entrepreneurship and special funding for young entrepreneurs many of which have been identified as EU-level best practices. Mr. Borgomeo teaches Enterprise Economics at various universities and has served as Research Director at Censis in the Work and Freelance Area, President of the Committee for Act 44/86 and President of the IG spa, a company promoting young entrepreneurs. Subsequently, Mr. Borgomeo served as Director General of Sviluppo Italia spa and Vice-President of the OECD LEED Programme. He was on the board of Italia Lavoro spa and headed the Technical Secretariat of the Ministry for Extraordinary Actions in the Mezzogiorno as well as serving as a consultant to Mezzogiorno Ministers on employment and the promotion of freelance work and serving on the board of ISFOL. From 2002 to 2007, Mr. Borgomeo was General Director of Bagnoli Futura spa with the objective of transforming and exploiting the former site of the ILVA Bagnoli Industrial Complex in Naples. Since 1973, Mr. Borgomeo has published various articles and essays.


Mario Bortolotti

An industrial expert and chief technician specialised in mechanics, Mario Bortolotti has worked as a mechanical designer for transport systems, project manager as well as heading the Technical Design and Foreign Facilities Offices, where he was responsible for starting activities and managing projects. At present, Mr. Bortolotti is the Director of the Copalc Bologna s.c.a r.l. Consortium, President of CIDES s.c.a r.l. and President of the Centro Servizi MCL s.r.l., a services company. Moreover, Mr. Bortolotti is Vice-President of Consorzio Nazionale Casa Qualità and a member of the Direttivo Unione Provinciale Cooperative di Bologna. Mr. Bortolotti is also President of Federabitazione Regionale Emilia Romagna and on the board of directors of Aemil Banca.


Luigi Chiari

CEO of the Fraternità Group and other Social Cooperatives in the Consortium

Born in Travagliato (BS) on January 21, 1965, Luigi Chiari is married and has three daughters. After receiving his diploma in Agriculture, he completed his civil service requirements by working for 20 months (1984-1986) in the Fraternità Cooperative, a social solidarity cooperative. This sector became Mr. Chiari’s lifelong interest. He started working as Personnel Officer for the cooperative and then moved on to the sales department, the technical office and in 1989 became Organisational Manager. In 1989, the cooperative underwent a vast expansion in terms of turnover, employment and entrepreneurial activities. Over a period of twenty years, the initial cooperative flourished and developed into 21 new companies operating in diverse sectors. In 1991, Mr. Chiari was appointed as Director of the Cooperative, becoming soon thereafter its CEO. Mr. Chiari innovatively oriented the cooperative to develop and target new experiences and realities. The social cooperative became an efficient entrepreneurial tool for the development of social solidarity. In 2001, Mr. Chiari turned to the provincial level and served as President of the Provincial Sol.Co Consortium of Brescia for two mandates. Mr. Chiari plays a significant role in the Brescia-based Confcooperative sector operating both in the field of social solidarity and serving as a member of the board. Mr. Chiari is also a member of the Lombardia Federsolidarietà Council. Moreover, he has worked on the design and development of the Fraternità “cooperative group model,” the strategic and financial management of member cooperatives and drafting long-term development plans. As a consultant and sector expert, Mr. Chiari has resolved major crises encountered by social cooperatives operating in Brescia. Luigi Chiari is currently CEO of the Fraternità Group and other social cooperatives in the consortium.


John Davies

Vice-President Intel World Ahead Program for Intel Corporation

John E. Davies is vice president of the Intel World Ahead Program for Intel Corporation. Davies is focused on creating demand for Intel platforms via Solutions, new usage models, and ecosystem scaling. His mandate is to bring the benefits of technology to the next billion people by working with the industry, governments and development agencies. Davies has worked for Intel since 1978, when he joined the company as the Reliability/QA Manager. During his 27 years with Intel, Davies has worked in engineering and manufacturing, as marketing manager for automotive products in Europe, and marketing manager for strategic accounts. He has been director of Marketing for the Mobile Computing Group, and vice president and marketing director for the Consumer Desktop Products group. In late 90’s John was vice president and general manager of Intel Asia Pacific Region where he was based in Hong Kong. Prior to joining Intel, Davies worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at IBM and as a development engineer at Philips in the United Kingdom. Davies received his B.S. in Chemistry and his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from Imperial College, London University. Intel has awarded Davies two prestigious Individual Achievement Awards for establishing Intel in the European automotive market in 1986, and for driving Intel’s mobile computing architecture into the Japanese market in 1992.


Tullio De Mauro

President Fondazione Mondo Digitale, Former Italian Minister of Education

Since 2001, Tullio De Mauro has served as President of the Consorzio Gioventù Digitale and subsequently as President of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. Mr. De Mauro is a Professor of General Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities of the Rome “La Sapienza” University. Prof. De Mauro has conducted and published research on Indo-European Linguistics, the History of Italian Linguistics, Semantics and Lexicology, Greek Syntax, the History of Ideas and Linguistic Research, Philosophy of Language, Linguistic Education and School Issues. For many years, Prof. De Mauro has worked on the theory and analysis of language comprehension conducting research and experiments, including practical-applicative methods. Prof. De Mauro has also had various institutional appointments. In particular, from April 26, 2000 to June 12, 2001 he served as Minister of Public Education. From July 2001 to February 2005, he was appointed by the Mayor of Rome to act as liaison with the Rome Universities. In 1995, under the Lamberto Dini Administration, the President of the Repubblic conferred him the honour of Grande Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, while in 2001, under the Silvio Berlusconi Administration, the President of the Repubblic conferred him the honour of Cavaliere di Gran Croce al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.


Massimo Egidi

Rector LUISS University of Rome

Massimo Egidi has been an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Turin since 1976. From 1987 to 2005, he was Professor of Political Economics at the Faculty of Economy and Trade of the University of Trento, where he also served as Director of the Economics Department (1989-1995). From 1996 to 2004, Prof. Egidi was Dean of the University of Trento and, for the last two years, a member of the CRUI Director’s board and responsible for relations with the European Union as well as acting as representative to EUA (European University Association) for relations between research and industry. From November 2005, Prof. Egidi has been the Dean of the Università LUISS Guido Carli. Over the past ten years, Prof. Egidi has visited at several universities and research centres, including: Ecole Politecnique (Paris), Ecole Normale Superieure (Cachan, Paris), Santa Fe Institute (USA), University of California at Berkeley, (USA), IIASA (Laxenburg, Austria). Prof. Egidi is co-founder, together with Axel Leijonhufvud, of the Laboratorio di Economia Sperimentale e Computazionale (CEEL, Trento). He is a founding member and Director of the Campus Europae-European University Foundation, Luxembourg and of the Italian-German University, which he currently directs. Moreover, Prof. Egidi is a member of: the Scientific Committee of ESNIE - European School on New Institutional Economics, at the Université de Paris X; the Società Italiana degli Economisti; the European Economic Society and the European Association of Evolutionary Economico, part of the Economico Doctorate at SciencePo (Paris). Egidi is an associate editor of various Italian and foreign magazines, including: Industrial and Corporate Change, European Journal of Economic and Social Systems and Mind and Society. He also works as a referee for Economia politica, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organization, Manchester Journal and for various programmes and projects at MIUR, CNVSU and CIVR. Prof. Egidi has authored over 50 scientific publications on issues regarding Experimental and Cognitive Economics, Theory of Organisation and Organisational Learning and the Theory of Decision Making and Limited Rationality.


Luca Falasconi

Luca Falasconi is Researcher of Agricultural and Rural Development Policies at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bologna and member of the Academic Board of the PhD programme on International Cooperation and Sustainable Development Policies, a joint programme with the EU Commission, UNECE and other Universities. He holds a PhD degree in Economy of agro-food systems of Mediterranean's basin (University of Parma, 2004). He is a President of Carpe Cibum cooperative, cooperative organizer and coordinator of projects “Last Minute Market” of recovery of unsold alimentary and pharmaceutical products of the small and big retail.


Giovanni Fiori

Professor of Enterprise Economy at the LUISS – Guido Carli University of Rome

Giovanni Fiori was born in Padua on December 15, 1961. He has been Professor of Enterprise Economics at the LUISS – Guido Carli University of Rome since 2000, where he also teaches Performance Measurement and is a member of the Evaluation Unit. Prof. Fiori also holds a course for the Master in Business Administration at the Management School on Enterprise Accounting and Extraordinary Financial Operations (enterprise evaluation, fusions and spin-offs). Prof. Fiori is a member of the Società Italiana di Storia della Ragioneria, the Accademia Italiana di Economia Aziendale, the European Accounting Association and the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI). Fiori also serves as auditor for the Bank of Italy and presides over various commissioned companies. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Treccani spa Italian Encyclopaedia Institute and of the Union of Roman Industrialists. He is on the board of the Ned Community (association of independent administrators of listed companies) and on the board of auditor of various enterprises. Prof. Fiori has authored various publications.


Raymond Horton

Director Social Enterprise Program, Columbia University

A lawyer and political scientist, Professor Horton teaches the course Modern Political Economy. A member of the Columbia Business School faculty since 1970, he served two years while on leave from the School as Executive Director of the Temporary Commission on City Finances during the New York City fiscal crisis, and later served 15 years as Director of Research and President of the Citizens Budget Commission. His publications on municipal finance and management include 14 books, numerous journal articles and policy studies. In 1983, he founded the Public and Nonprofit Management Program at the School. In 1998, that program morphed into the Social Enterprise Program, which Horton directed until 2009. In 2009, he was named Faculty Director of Social Enterprise programs in the School’s Executive Education division. As part of his executive education responsibilities, Professor Horton directs custom programs for the Center for Curatorial Leadership and the King Khalid Foundation.


Rod Lohin

Director of the AIC Centre for Corporate Citizenship, University of Toronto

Rod Lohin is Executive Director of the AIC Institute for Corporate Citizenship at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Rod oversees the AIC Institute’s research, grants, initiatives to engage business leaders and MBA students, including teaching a course on corporate citizenship strategy.  He writes and presents about corporate citizenship widely, and applies the AIC Institute’s research and tools in consulting projects with leading corporations like the RBC Financial Group (Canada’s largest bank) and Research in Motion (makers of the Blackberry). Rod was formerly the Director of the corporate citizenship practice at Manifest Communications, working with brands like Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Kellogg and Sears.  Previously, he was Director, Partnerships and Projects for United Way of Greater Toronto and he started his career as a management consultant at Patterson Kirk Wallace.


Luigi Mariano

Luigi Mariano, a Communications consultant and teacher, holds a degree in Theology from the Università Pontificia Lateranense in Rome, a degree in Philosophy from the University of Chieti and a Master’s in Communication and Images from the European Institute of Design. He teaches institutional relations and enterprise social responsibility at the Faculty of Communications of the Rome “La Sapienza” University. Prof. Mariano also teaches Marketing Management at the Interdisciplinary Institute of social communications, Pontifical Gregorian University Recent publications include: “Responsabilità etica d’impresa, teoria e buone pratiche”, Naples, Liguori, 2008 and “Etica Utile. Alfonso Molina

Professor of Technology Strategy at The University of Edinburgh and Scientific Director Fondazione Mondo Digitale

Alfonso Molina, a co-founder of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, is the Foundation’s Scientific Director and Professor of Technology Strategy at the University of Edinburgh (UK). Molina’s principle action-research interests focus on the theory and practice of innovation, technology strategy and management and, in particular, ICT-based didactic innovation and social innovation for an inclusive knowledge society. Prof. Molina has served as advisor and consultant to various European Community directorates and has published books, papers and reports on a wide range of subjects, including microprocessors, multimedia newspapers, e-commerce for public administrations, the constitution of industrial clusters at the regional level, evaluation of enterprise networks and free and open source software for e-government. Moreover, Prof. Molina designed the original strategy for the Global Cities Dialogue, including the draft of the Helsinki Declaration that has been signed by over 180 cities from all around the world. Alfonso Molina has worked in Rome, Stockholm and Edinburgh and is the former Chairman of the international juries of the Stockholm Challenge Award and the European Citizenship for All Award organised, respectively, by the Stockholm Municipality and Deloitte & Touche. Prof. Molina is the Chairman of the international jury for the Global Junior Challenge Competition promoted by the Municipality of Rome.


Eduardo Pérez

Lecturer and researcher in IT Management and Educational Innovation

Eduardo Pérez works as lecturer and researcher at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV), Stockholm University and The Royal Institute of Technology. Eduardo was part of a team that, in 1988, initiated a project to use IT to share and distribute, in real time, knowledge from areas and organizations of high knowledge concentration to areas of low knowledge density and scarce resources. The educational programme and the pedagogical model were so successful that it led, unfortunately, to the transformation of the university studies in Gotland to the Gotland University. Out of that experience, Eduardo created two conceptual and practical models. On the one hand, the pedagogical model SHADE (Shared and real-time Distributed Education) and, on the other hand, the technological model INCA (Interactive Networks for Collaborative Action). Both, the pedagogical and the technical model have proved highly attractive to government, companies, universities and NGOs, both in the developed and, especially, in the developing world. Eduardo has built 27 highly sophisticated technological platforms to share and distribute education, mainly in Sweden, but also in Russia, Spain, Chile and Panamá. The platforms are fully compatible with all other existing educational technologies to guarantee the connectivity with remote areas with more rudimentary technical and economic development. Worth mentioning is the platform that integrated and allowed to share knowledge resources to the three military Colleges of education in Sweden. Eduardo has also worked as educational consultant and IT-educator for many governmental institutions like, the Swedish government, the Swedish Department of Defence, The National Corporation of Technical Research in Chile, The City of Knowledge in Panama; and companies like the Swedish Post, the Swedish Television, Cell Networks, and others.


Barbara Pilan

Coordinator of the Home Assistance Service of Crescere Insieme and Manager of the Multi-functional Centre Luogo della Cura

After obtaining her degree in Philosophy from the University of Turin, in 1987, Ms. Barbara Pilan began working in the field of cooperation with an educational service addressing minors. Subsequently, she was responsible for the administration and planning of the cooperative’s services. Since 2000, she has coordinated the home assistance service of Crescere Insieme and manages the Multi-functional Centre Luogo della Cura in Turin. Ms. Pilan has collaborated on feasibility studies – promoted by the cooperative movement and local agencies – to design and develop integrated services to assist families and to involve and train family assistants.


Jay Vincent Plaza


Graduated in Bachelor of Science in Letters and Languages and Bachelor of Science in Business Management at Notre Dame University, Australia. Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) at the Notre Dame University, Australia. Presently working for a teaching university hospital in New Jersey, USA and co-founded HotCity Wireless back in 1999. Today, the organization has deployed wireless (WiFi) internet access to 8 regions in the Philippines and continues to reach out to underpriviledged schools and communities. One of its ambitious initiative for 2010 is to provide a floating learning center for a tribal group which are innocently affected by the countries 40 year old on-going conflict.


Lenia Samuel

deputy Director General, DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, European Commision

Lenia Samuel has been Deputy-Director General in DG Employment, Social Affairs & Equal Opportunities, since 1st June, 2005. She is responsible for the European Social Fund, the EU's main financial instrument for investing in people, with a budget of 76 billion for the period 2007-2013. Prior to this, she had a long and successful career in the Cyprus Civil Service, which culminated in her appointment as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. In this capacity, she coordinated/monitored all the work involved in the preparation of accession to the EU, in the areas of labour law, gender equality, non-discrimination and working conditions and health. She has wide International and European experience in the area of Labour and Social policies.


Chetan Sharma

Chetan Sharma is the Founder & CEO of Datamation Group of companies, one of India's earliest and most reputable Knowledge Management and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) company employing over 3500 whole-time employees, mostly from the marginalized and deprived rural communities. The mission at Datamation ever since inception, has been to empower the weakest of the weak specifically women & youth for sustainable livelihoods and long term skills development. Mirjam Schoning

Mirjam Schöning overseas the operations of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship to ensure the Foundation selects the highest quality of social entrepreneurs and provides a unique platform for them to interact with decision leaders at the regional and industry level. She is directly in charge of the Foundation’s activities in Latin America and Europe. Mirjam joined the Foundation at its inception in August 2000. She graduated with a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. Previously, she worked as a consultant at Bain & Company in Germany (1996-1998). In addition, she analyzed the social sector lending strategies in Southern Latin America for the World Bank, Washington, D.C. (1999) and reviewed investment decisions at Shell Scandinavia (1994-1995). She holds a Master in Business Administration from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, and studied at ESADE, Spain and the Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden. Her fields of expertise include social entrepreneurship, microfinance and social investing.


Alfredo Somoza

Founder, Italian Association of Responsible Tourism

Alfredo Luís Somoza is an anthropologist specialised in American studies. He has served as a representative of the League for the Rights and Liberation of Peoples at the UN Working Group on Indigenous Affairs (Geneva, 1988-1989). Mr. Somoza has particpated in research studies conducted on Italian psychiatric services (Ist. Mario Negri, Milan), international drug trafficking (CESPI, Prov. Milan), Italian and Spanish tourist press (ICEI-AIETI-European Union) and on the positioning of the tourist market in the Eolian Islands (ICEI-Sicilia-Turismo-Comune di Lipari). Over the course of the last twenty years, he has held over 400 presentations as a visiting professor in univesities, high schools and middle schools, includine 150-hour courses, professional updating courses for teachers and professional training courses as well as participating in national and international conferences. Mr. Somoza is a member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of COCIS Development NGOs and of the National Council for the Association of Italian NGOs. Mr. Somoza was also the President (as well as Founder) of the Italian Association for Responsible Tourism (AITR) for two terms. He still works in AITR as a director and is in charge of the “Tourism and Fighting Poverty” sector. He is a member of the Council of Affiliated Members for UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) and a member of the Scientific-Technical Committee of the Italian National Tourist Agency (ENIT). He is President of the NGO for development cooperation and ICEI studies centre. Mr. Alfredo Luis Somoza, a professional journalist since 1987, has conducted radio and television programmes in Italy and Switzerland on international politics, North-South relations, drug trafficking, the environment, ethnic/indigenous minorities, history/geography, tourism, ethcial consumerism, etc. Mr. Somoza has also prepared various Geography textbooks for schools and has published essays and articles on over 40 Italian, Latina American and European periodicals.


Tonya Surman

Founder and Director Center for Social Innovation (Toronto)

Tonya Surman is the founding executive director of the Centre for Social Innovation – a dynamic convergence space whose mission is to spark, connect and support new ideas that are making the world a better place. CSI provides shared space to 150 social mission groups, act as a community centre for social innovators and provides a home to several incubated projects. www.socialinnovation.ca  Tonya was also the founding Partnership Director for the Canadian Partnership for Children's Health and Environment – www.healthyenvironmentforkids.ca, whose work led to a new legislative framework to manage chemicals and the banning of Bisphenol A in baby bottles. She was also senior partner in the Commons Group- www.commons.ca , the founding business manager for www.rabble.ca and executive director of Web Networks www.web.net.  Tonya has been creating and leading social ventures since 1994 and has built her body of knowledge around multi-sectoral collaboration and entrepreneurship for social change.


Julia Pieruzzi Tirelli


National Director of CDI Uruguay – Member of CDI International Network Board Professor Julia Pieruzzi Tirelli is Specialist in Education and New Technologies. Since 1984 has being working under the guide of Professor Seymour Papert (Epistemology and Learning Group – MIT Media Lab). She considers that it was there, and with such a mentor, where she learned how to learn. Her lifelong concern has been to promote social justice. Since she is an educator, her main efforts to achieve this goal has been to ensure equal opportunities to everyone in gaining access to knowledge. She is convinced that, for being successful at this purpose, the best tools must be used in education. Nowadays, the more efficient way to make it happen is trough Internet. Pioneer in the introduction of computers in schools, in curriculum design for teachers and educational uses of Internet. Eager to spread that ideas she teaches and gives lectures in Educational Uses of New Technologies at various universities and international forums. Also she had contributed at some collaborative books and collaborates as a columnist with several magazines. Her best memories in fostering the use of New Technologies in education are her deep involvement at the projects “Digital Nations” and “Junnior Summit”, leaded by Nicholas Negroponte at the MIT Media Lab. Currently, she is collaborating with CEIBAL Plan, the Uruguayan chapter of OLPC (One Laptop Per Child).

Vice-Minister for Economic Development and Foreign Commerce

Adolfo Urso, 51, has two sons (Pietro, 27, and Dario, 25). Mr. Adolfo Urso is currently Vice-Minister for Economic Development. Mr. Urso has been a Member of Parliament since 1994 and has served as National Spokesperson for Alleanza Nazionale. Born in Padoa, Mr. Urso has lived in Rome for twenty-five years. He received a degree in Sociology with full honours from the Rome La Sapienza University. Mr. Urso, a professional journalist since 1981, has worked with the Secolo d'Italia, deputy editor of the Roma daily (1991-92) and Head Reporter for the Italia weekly (1993-1994). He directs Charta Minuta, the monthly publication of the political-cultural Farefuturo Foundation, of which he is Secretary General. Mr. Urso also founded the Osservatorio Parlamentare Foundation, which is considered the cultural arm of the centre-right. Mr. Urso has directed the monthly Proposta nazionale and the periodical Morbillo. He has collaborated with the monthly Mass Media and has authored various essays and books including “Euroglobal” (2003). Adolfo Urso began his political career at an early age in the Fronte della Gioventù, the youth organisation of the MSI and has collaborated with Fini since 1977. Mr. Urso was always a staunch promoter of a modern Right and was one of the main promoters of Alleanza Nazionale. In November 1992, he became National Coordinator for the Committee promoting Alleanza Nazionale. He was a member of the founding assembly for the new political party held on January 22, 1994 and introduced the assembly works as secretary general. At present, Mr. Urso is a member of the party’s national executive council. In the XII legislature, Mr. Urso was a member of the IX Permanent Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Commission, the Special Commission for Community Policies and the Parliamentary Commission on the Mafia. In the XIII legislature, Mr. Urso was a member of the IX Permanent Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Commission and the RAI Oversight Commission. At the 1994 political elections, Mr. Urso was elected to the collegio 23 of XV district Lazio 1, with 40.072 votes (47.6%) with Forza Italia and Alleanza nazionale. At the 1996 political elections, Mr. Urso was elected as first candidate of Alleanza Nazionale in Lazio with 220.800 votes (23.5%). At the 2001 political elections, Mr. Urso was elected with Alleanza nazionale in Veneto and Lazio. In 2001, Mr. Urso was appointed as Vice-Minister for Productive Activities and responsible for Foreign Commerce in the Berlusconi Government. At the 2006 political elections, Mr. Urso was elected with Alleanza Nazionale in Veneto and confirmed as a Member of the lower house. He also was a member of the Commission on Productive Activities, Commerce and Tourism during the XV legislature. During the XVI Legislature, Mr. Urso was elected as an MP and appointed Secretary for Economic Development on May 12, 2008. From June 26, 2009, Mr. Adolfo Urso is Vice-Minister for Economic Development and Foreign Commerce.


John Vassallo

Vice-President EU Affairs, Microsoft

John Vassallo is Microsoft Vice President EU Affairs as well as Associate General Counsel for the company. He leads Microsoft’s EU Corporate Affairs and Regulatory team.

His position was created to help advance the company’s dialogue with the EU policy and regulatory community.

Vassallo is also Chair of AmCham EU, the organization in Brussels that represents 140 companies of US parentage at the European Institutions and EU governments

From 1993 to 1997 Vassallo was Ambassador of Malta to the European Union, NATO’s Partnership for Peace and Belgium, where he negotiated the timing of his country’s accession to the EU and NATO Partnership for Peace.

He then became General Electric’s Senior Counsel & Director of the European Affairs Office, based in Brussels, a post he held until he joined Microsoft in 2008.

Vassallo attended the University of Malta and graduated with a B.A. degree in English, Italian and Maltese in 1968. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Laws from the same university in 1973. He undertook his postgraduate studies in European Law and Economics at Amsterdam University and in Swedish Law at Stockholm University. After one year at his family law firm in Malta, he joined the Euroc Corporation of Malmo, Sweden, in 1975. During his 15 years at Euroc, he moved from Audit Staff to Group Controller at the Siporex Division. In 1984 he became Manager of Siporex France for a major reconstruction of the company and moved to Vice President and Director Finance and Administration of Dynapac, another division of the group, in 1986.

In 1987 he became President of Dynapac Concrete. From 1991 to 1993 he worked as a lobbyist and Director of Cembureau, the European Cement Association in Brussels.


Andy Westwood

Chairman OECD LEED Forum on Social Innovations

Andy Westwood is President of the OECD Forum on Social Innovation and an adviser to the UK Government in the Department of Communities and Local Government. Andy has also worked as a special adviser at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and at the UK Treasury. He has worked in education and employment policy for many years including as an adviser to the Leitch Review of Skills and for a range of other organisations including the Work Foundation and the Centre for Economic and Social Inclusion.

He has written widely on other subjects including urban regeneration, economic development, welfare to work and city policy and is a visiting professor in local economic development at London's South Bank University and in business at the University of Buckingham.


Alessio Zagaglia

Alessio Zagaglia was born on September 21, 1971 in Rome, where he lives with his wife Michaela and his daughter Martina. Graduated with honors in Economics at the University La Sapienza of Rome, he won the Prize “Guglielmo Reiss Romoli " as the top graduate of the year. He began his professional career in 1996 at the Roland Berger & Partner, a multinational consultancy firm, where he worked in the area of Strategy Management. He continued his career first at the Sales & Marketing Division of Selfin SpA, a company of the IBM Group (1996) and subsequently in Telecom Italia (1997-2001) at the Information Technology Division. Early 2002 he left Telecom Italia Group to join the CMG Wireless Data Solution multinational ICT company, with the responsibility of starting-up the subsidiary in Italy. He supported the subsequent merger of the company with Logica CMG, where he was appointed Sales Responsible of the Public Administration Division. In March 2003 he joined Ericsson Telecomunicazioni SpA as Public & Economic Affairs Responsible at the Marketing & Strategy Division. In 2005 he was appointed Public & Economic Affairs Director at Ericsson Italy, reporting directly to the CEO. In his role, he had the responsibility for the development and management of the relationships with the Italian Government institutions, industry associations and Authorities with respect to the Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Responsibility activities. In 2008 he was appointed Head of Public & Economic Affairs Function for the South East Europe countries. He is currently member of the Ericsson Management Team of the Market Unit South East Europe and of the Country Italy. He collaborates with the most important Italian Universities and Education Institutes. He is member of the Steering Committee of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa for the Master in Management, Innovation and Engineering Services (MAINS) as well as of the Steering Committee of the Master in Economics and Management of Communication and Media at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. He led the course "Creation and development of new enterprises" (2005-2007) at the Faculty of Economics at the LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome. At present he has the role of Secretary General of the Fondazione Lars Magnus Ericsson. He has been Director of the Board of the Fondazione Ugo Bordoni (2005-2008) and since January 2009 member of the Founding Members Committee. In Confindustria (The National Association of Italian Industry) he has been a member of the Technical Committee for Innovation and Research (2006-2008) and he is currently a member of the Working Team for Communications and Broadband Development. In the Rome Industrialist and Enterprises Association (UIR) he has been member of the Committee for Multinational Companies (2006-2008).


Stefano Zamagni

Adjunct Professor of International Political Economy Johns Hopkins University, Bologna Center and President of the Scientific Committee of of AICCON

Stefano Zamagni, born in Rimini in 1943, is a Professor of Political Economics at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Bologna and Adjunct Professor of International Political Economy at the Johns Hopkins University, Bologna Center. Prof. Zamagni earned his degree in Economics and Trade in 1966 at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan) then, from 1969 to 1973, he attended a specialisation course at the Linacre College of the University of Oxford (UK). Before teaching in Bologna, Prof. Zamagni taught at the University of Parma and at the L. Bocconi University of Milan from 1985 to 2007. His administrative-academic experience includes: Vice-President of the Società Italiana degli Economisti (1989-92); President of the diploma (now degree) course on Economics of Cooperative Enterprises and Non-profit Organisations at the Forlì campus of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Bologna and from 1997 (also in Forlì) President of the AICCON (Italian Association for Cooperative Culture and Non-profit Organisations) Scientific Committee. From 2002-2008, Prof. Zamagni was Director of the Scientific Committee of the School for Health Policy at the University of Bologna. From 2007, he is President of the Agency for non-profit community work in Milan.
